During any semester-long course, you will encounter a huge amount of information, both factual and conceptual. Many students treat essay questions as “dumping grounds” for the information that they acquired in the days and weeks preceding the exam. They pile on fact after fact, concept after concept, date after date, name after name, with little thought about whether all this information helps them answer the question. The professor will know that you have managed to cram a great deal of irrelevant information into your short-term memory. But whether you have really thought about the issues at hand and used the knowledge you have gained in order to reflect critically on an important question will remain a mystery.

So, after you feel that you understand the kind of response that the essay question is trying to elicit, ask yourself about which bits of information will be the most relevant to your response. Don’t try to throw everything into the pot. Be selective. Use those facts and ideas that are most helpful in supporting your overall argument. After doing the reading and attending the lectures, you do have enough information to answer the question effectively. What is crucial, though, is to organize the information and to present it in a way that buttresses the main theme of your essay. Organization Is Everything Because they have not stopped to ask themselves the questions above, many students plunge right into an essay without thinking about how to organize their thoughts.

The professor will know that you are a wind-bag – not that you have thought seriously about the question. Once you are sure that you know what the question is asking and have spent a few minutes reflecting on the kinds of information that you want to use in attempting to answer it, spend a further few minutes sketching out the form that your answer will take. Here are a few ideas on how to begin: Make an Outline Sketch out how you plan to structure the essay. You can even use the exam booklet or the back of the exam in order to write a brief outline, flow chart, diagram, or whatever form you find the most helpful in organizing your thoughts.

The important thing is to have a clear idea of what you want to say and how you are going to say it – before you begin writing the essay itself. There is an additional advantage to writing an outline or essay plan: It may turn out that you simply budgeted your time poorly and did not have time to complete the entire essay as you had planned. But if the professor sees that you had a clear idea of what you wanted to argue, you are likely to receive at least some credit for what you have written. On the other hand, if you have managed to fill up a dozen pages without making a coherent argument, chances are that the professor will remain relatively unimpressed. Keep It Simple Think back to eighth grade composition class.

Remember the “three-point enumeration” essays you probably had to write? They consisted of an opening paragraph, three further substantive paragraphs and a conclusion. The opening paragraph set out the general ideas you were going to explore, the three following paragraphs expanded on each of those ideas, and the final paragraph wrapped up what you had said. The same format – with perhaps some modifications – can be used to write responses to essay questions. Opening sentence and first paragraph: State clearly the main point that you wish to make in the essay. In other words, someone should be able to read the first sentence and know exactly how you plan to answer the question. Don’t try to be too cute, but a catchy opening sentence which states simply and clearly the line of argument you intend to take is always desirable.

Other sentences in the first paragraph should then support the first sentence and sketch out the ways in which subsequent paragraphs will expand on the theme of the essay itself. Body of the Essay: For normal essay questions on exams say, those in which you have an hour to complete two essays , you should have no more than three or four paragraphs in the body of the essay. Each paragraph should make a clear and discrete point, and that point should support your overall argument.

I know that whenever I read from my e-reader for too long, my eyes begin to feel tired and my neck hurts. We should not add to these problems by giving people, especially young people, more reasons to look at screens. Second, it is incredibly narrow-minded to assume that the only service libraries offer is book lending. Libraries have a multitude of benefits, and many are only available if the library has a physical location. Some of these benefits include acting as a quiet study space, giving people a way to converse with their neighbors, holding classes on a variety of topics, providing jobs, answering patron questions, and keeping the community connected.

One neighborhood found that, after a local library instituted community events such as play times for toddlers and parents, job fairs for teenagers, and meeting spaces for senior citizens, over a third of residents reported feeling more connected to their community. Similarly, a Pew survey conducted in found that nearly two-thirds of American adults feel that closing their local library would have a major impact on their community. While replacing libraries with tablets may seem like a simple solution, it would encourage people to spend even more time looking at digital screens, despite the myriad issues surrounding them. It would also end access to many of the benefits of libraries that people have come to rely on.

In many areas, libraries are such an important part of the community network that they could never be replaced by a simple object. The author begins by giving an overview of the counter-argument, then the thesis appears as the first sentence in the third paragraph. The essay then spends the rest of the paper dismantling the counter argument and showing why readers should believe the other side. Started in , it had a goal of eliminating malaria in Africa within the next ten years. Based upon previously successful programs in Brazil and the United States, the program focused mainly on vector control.

This included widely distributing chloroquine and spraying large amounts of DDT. More than one billion dollars was spent trying to abolish malaria. However, the program suffered from many problems and in , WHO was forced to admit that the program had not succeeded in eradicating malaria. One of the major reasons for the failure of the project was that it set uniform strategies and policies. By failing to consider variations between governments, geography, and infrastructure, the program was not nearly as successful as it could have been. Most African countries don't have the resources to send all their people to doctors and get shots, nor can they afford to clear wetlands or other malaria prone areas.

Additionally, the widespread use of chloroquine has created drug resistant parasites which are now plaguing Sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, newer, more expensive drugs need to be used to prevent and treat malaria, which further drives up the cost of malaria treatment for a region that can ill afford it. Instead of developing plans to treat malaria after the infection has incurred, programs should focus on preventing infection from occurring in the first place. One of the cheapest and most effective ways of preventing malaria is to implement insecticide-treated bed nets ITNs. These nets provide a protective barrier around the person or people using them. Bed nets are also very effective because most mosquito bites occur while the person is sleeping, so bed nets would be able to drastically reduce the number of transmissions during the night.

Because money is so scarce in Sub-Saharan Africa, the low cost is a great benefit and a major reason why the program is so successful. Bed nets cost roughly 2 USD to make, last several years, and can protect two adults. Studies have shown that, for every more nets are being used, one less child dies of malaria. Reducing the number of people who contract malaria would also reduce poverty levels in Africa significantly, thus improving other aspects of society like education levels and the economy. Vector control is more effective than treatment strategies because it means fewer people are getting sick.

When fewer people get sick, the working population is stronger as a whole because people are not put out of work from malaria, nor are they caring for sick relatives. Additionally, a family with members who have malaria spends roughly a quarter of its income treatment, not including the loss of work they also must deal with due to the illness. A strong working population creates a stronger economy, which Sub-Saharan Africa is in desperate need of. This essay begins with an introduction, which ends with the thesis that malaria eradication plans in Sub-Saharan Africa should focus on prevention rather than treatment.

The first part of the essay lays out why the counter argument treatment rather than prevention is not as effective, and the second part of the essay focuses on why prevention of malaria is the better path to take. There are many ways payments could work. They could be in the form of a free-market approach, where athletes are able to earn whatever the market is willing to pay them, it could be a set amount of money per athlete, or student athletes could earn income from endorsements, autographs, and control of their likeness, similar to the way top Olympians earn money.

Proponents of the idea believe that, because college athletes are the ones who are training, participating in games, and bringing in audiences, they should receive some sort of compensation for their work. Supporters of this idea point to Zion Williamson, the Duke basketball superstar, who, during his freshman year, sustained a serious knee injury. Williamson seems to have agreed with them and declared his eligibility for the NCAA draft later that year. If he was being paid, he may have stayed at Duke longer. Paying athletes could also stop the recruitment scandals that have plagued the NCAA. In , the NCAA stripped the University of Louisville's men's basketball team of its national championship title because it was discovered coaches were using sex workers to entice recruits to join the team.

There have been dozens of other recruitment scandals where college athletes and recruits have been bribed with anything from having their grades changed, to getting free cars, to being straight out bribed. By paying college athletes and putting their salaries out in the open, the NCAA could end the illegal and underhanded ways some schools and coaches try to entice athletes to join. People who argue against the idea of paying college athletes believe the practice could be disastrous for college sports. It could also ruin the tight camaraderie of many college teams if players become jealous that certain teammates are making more money than they are. They also argue that paying college athletes actually means only a small fraction would make significant money.

General Education. Need to defend your opinion on an issue? They combine persuasive arguments with fact-based research, and, when done well, can be powerful tools for making someone agree with your point of view. After giving an overview of this type of essay, we provide three argumentative essay examples. After each essay, we explain in-depth how the essay was structured, what worked, and where the essay could be improved. We end with tips for making your own argumentative essay as strong as possible. Its purpose is to persuade the reader to agree with the argument being made. For example, say you wanted to write an argumentative essay stating that Charleston, SC is a great destination for families.

For it to be an argumentative essay, you need to have facts and data to support your argument, such as the number of child-friendly attractions in Charleston, special deals you can get with kids, and surveys of people who visited Charleston as a family and enjoyed it. The first argument is based entirely on feelings, whereas the second is based on evidence that can be proven. The standard five paragraph format is common, but not required, for argumentative essays. These essays typically follow one of two formats: the Toulmin model or the Rogerian model. Below are three examples of argumentative essays, written by yours truly in my school days, as well as analysis of what each did well and where it could be improved.

Proponents of this idea state that it will save local cities and towns money because libraries are expensive to maintain. However, it would be a serious mistake to replace libraries with tablets. First, digital books and resources are associated with less learning and more problems than print resources. Additionally, staring too long at a screen has been shown to cause numerous health problems, including blurred vision, dizziness, dry eyes, headaches, and eye strain, at much higher instances than reading print does. People who use tablets and mobile devices excessively also have a higher incidence of more serious health issues such as fibromyalgia, shoulder and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle strain.

Out of the Division I athletic departments, fewer than a dozen earn any money. Those against paying college athletes also believe that the athletes are receiving enough benefits already.

No other college students receive anywhere near as much from their schools. People on this side also point out that, while the NCAA brings in a massive amount of money each year, it is still a non-profit organization. Taking away a significant part of that revenue would hurt smaller programs that rely on that money to keep running. College athletes spend a significant amount of time and energy playing for their school, but they are compensated for it by the scholarships and perks they receive. Adding a salary to that would result in a college athletic system where only a small handful of athletes those likely to become millionaires in the professional leagues are paid by a handful of schools who enter bidding wars to recruit them, while the majority of student athletics and college athletic programs suffer or even shut down for lack of money.

Continuing to offer the current level of benefits to student athletes makes it possible for as many people to benefit from and enjoy college sports as possible. This argumentative essay follows the Rogerian model. Always make sure that your thesis statement is easy to find. Before you begin writing your essay, research what the other side believes, and what their strongest points are. For every point you make, make sure you have facts to back it up. Some examples are previous studies done on the topic, surveys of large groups of people, data points, etc. There should be lots of numbers in your argumentative essay that support your side of the argument.

This will make your essay much stronger compared to only relying on your own opinions to support your argument. Argumentative essays are persuasive essays that use facts and evidence to support their side of the argument. Most argumentative essays follow either the Toulmin model or the Rogerian model. By reading good argumentative essay examples, you can learn how to develop your essay and provide enough support to make readers agree with your opinion. Words: Stereotype is the common belief built in people where they make a judgment about certain groups of people even without knowing them. It also entails the thoughts adopted concerning particular groups or individuals in accordance to the way the carry out their activities. People always make assumptions whenever they fail to understand a particular subject which later develops to common knowledge. It may also be defined as the aspect of generalizing things where people make false assumptions.

Many of the stereotypes built around people involve every aspect that can be used to describe them. For instance, the assumption that all black people are good athletes is a stereotype that generalizes all black people. There are negative and positive stereotypes that can drive people to live fearful lives. They are hurtful and wrong as they might give the false information about a certain group of people Krieglmeyer, There are various types of stereotypes used in defining groups or individuals of people according to what they are characterized in doing. These stereotypes are based on views held against groups or race of people which may have emerged due to incidents or false assumptions. The various types of stereotypes include: racial stereotypes, cultural, gender, sexual orientation just to mention but a few Krieglmeyer, People form stereotypes because it favors them cognitively as they no longer have to consider information about every member in a particular group.

It also helps in categorizing the members in the group by applying the general information to all members. Similarly, stereotyping occurs due to the fact that it gives people the satisfaction of their urge to understand and predict the social and physical world Krieglmeyer, Additionally, people stereotype others as a way of making them feel better about themselves. It brings about the assumption that their groups are better than others. It gives them a simple and efficient way of behavior. It may occur in situations where resources are scarce and people form groups to prejudice others and acquire the limited commodity. However, in situations where resources are plenty people stereotypes only bring about negative effects that cause hatred and disputes.

Most of the time stereotypes are formed to instill fear and control over certain groups of people. This behavior of prejudicing others is brought about by the inclination of the view that a particular group carries out their activities in the right way Ross, Stereotypes exaggerate a particular group by assuming that people who belong to a certain category have the same personality traits. It is an occurrence that takes place in the brain which brings about the natural resemblance. For instance, Arabs or Muslims are normally associated with terrorist activities therefore people will form stereotypes that all Arabs carry firearms and are engaged in such activities wherever they are Ross, This is a complete exaggeration as it brings about negative effects and may even cause hate crimes.

The same case applies to black people who are associated to poverty. The assumption in many people is that all people based in Africa or outside the United States or any other white dominated country are poor Ross, Most of the assumptions or stereotypes made are normally false. Some give positive aspects about particular groups while others are completely wrong. To some extent some stereotypes are true as they bring out the positive aspects that are related to particular groups of people. Some of these aspects include: the assumption that black people are good at sports, Italians are good cooks, women take time to respond to situations while men are spontaneous et cetera Gupta, These instances are somehow true as they bring out the positive aspects that these groups are associated with.

It also creates a good view of these groups as they enable effective interaction and gives some idea of what people are likely to be and the behaviors that are considerably acceptable Gupta, The reason why I believe some of these stereotypes are true is that they eliminate negative assumptions. They bring some form of contradiction to the prejudice given on them and enable people to want to know the truth. It creates an understanding about each of the groups as they get to realize that they share common factors in one area or another Krieglmeyer, Similarly, these stereotypes are true due to the fact that they bring about a realization of what the people are truly about. For instance, assuming that Arabs are terrorists brings about the negative perspective of the people but ones their true identity is revealed, people get to know who they are and what they are.

Similarly, most of the stereotypes made portray a good image of certain groups of people; therefore it promotes their identity and involvement in basic activities which may lead to convenient and effective interactions Krieglmeyer, Stereotypes in the past involved assumptions such as the role of women, or cultural factors that portrayed the characteristics of particular groups Women were perceived as people who take their time in everything they do. They were perceived as people who care too much about their physical appearance and the things that would keep them beautiful Ross, In the past women would engage in activities such as being cheerleaders and like playing with dolls therefore they were perceived as people who only like girlish things and could not be involved in making decisions.

Similarly, there were other cultural stereotypes that involved men in terms of fashion. Men would wear trousers that were sagging. Little did they know that this was a policy maintained in prisons where inmates were required to remove their belts to avoid suicide Ross, In addition to this, people assumed men were stronger and aggressive and therefore had to be involved in building the nations. The perspective of people who used such kind of stereotypes was that they did not want to get involved with others as they had their own fears Gupta, Black people were considered illiterate and could not get to the level of the white people and therefore they were treated as slaves.

The fear of the unknown was mostly used during those times. Insecurities and control were used to instill fear in others Gupta, Black people were assumed as poor people who did not have any form of civilization. Therefore, the white people used them as slaves to carry out their activities. There was also the perspective that the white groups of people were better that the black or even Asian or any other. This created a scenario where judgments were made about certain groups Gupta, Finally, the media also played a huge role in creating the impression about certain groups. The positive and negative characterization of people brought about the issues of stereotyping.

Women were perceived as inferior and thus denied some rights. There was also disparity in the roles given to both women and men. Gupta, Vishal K. Differences between Men and Women in Opportunity Evaluation as a Function of Gender Stereotypes and Stereotype Activation. Krieglmeyer, Regina; Sherman, Jeffrey W. As you are aware, a well-written critical response paper with incredible ideas can be ruined by a great deal of grammar and punctuation mistakes. Therefore, editing and proofreading is a great opportunity to furnish your writing to an excellent paper that guarantees a high grade. In addition, it allows you to rephrase awkwardly written sentences as well as to standardize formatting and referencing. When proofreading your writing, you are able to provide more clarity on your ideas, improve the quality of your paper, and enhance the organization of your ideas throughout the paper. Due to many school-related commitments, many students may not have sufficient time to write an excellent critical response paper.

Our prices are extremely low because we are always ready to accommodate your lean budget. Further to this, we provide already written well-researched samples of critical response papers from a wide range of topics. Your effort is just to place your order and we will do the rest. In most cases, your paper writing assessment will contribute to the final grade at the end of the semester. When expressing your thoughts, emotions, and opinion, write in the first person. For example, do not hesitate to use words that reflect your feelings directly.

For example, do not hesitate to use phrases such as the ones listed below. Further to expressing your opinion, you must prove your viewpoint. Therefore, you need to have in place a great argumentative strategy. You may choose to use real-life examples, statistics, direct quotes, or comparisons to enhance your claim. For example, analyzing the text in terms of social and historical context will allow you to imagine the circumstances under which the author wrote the piece of art. Besides, examining the context of a film or a novel allows you to imagine the circumstances under which the editor went through when creating the masterpiece. In addition, a critical response paper activates your imagination and allows you to have a personal connection with the author.

For example, you imagine having a real conversation with the characters and the author and the set of questions you would ask them. This kind of imagination helps you to have different perspectives towards a particular masterpiece. Most importantly, do not be afraid to express your emotions when writing this kind of paper. As part of your analysis, always share your emotions with the reader. For example, you can tell how the analyzed piece of writing influenced your feelings and overall mood. However, do not overdo exclamation marks when trying to express your emotions to the reader.

Whatever happens, do not try to skim as this will not help you to understand deeply the chosen masterpiece. Always take your time to watch or read attentively as the magic is always in the finer details. Skimming will make you miss the most convincing arguments, so you will end producing a baseless paper. Further to this, do not just summarize the text. Instead, provide a critique to the paper in order to earn full marks for your critical response paper. Always remember that the reader wants to know your reaction to the piece of art, and a mere summary cannot tell your opinion about the text being examined. Although the summary is important in providing brief information about the piece of art, the analysis part is more important and should cover a large portion of your paper.

Unless stated, do not use additional sources for your critical response paper. Contrary to other research papers , critical response papers do not require the use of scientific sources. Most critical responses draw examples, illustrations, and quotes from the primary source. However, you are at liberty to read critical reviews written by other authors on the selected piece of art to get a different perspective. More importantly, never be baseless when writing a critical response paper as this will lead to automatic failure. You will need to reinforce your thoughts with valid arguments or counterarguments in order to score a high grade in your critical response paper assignment.
